Team Leadership and History
Since their inception in 1967, the Dallas Stars have had a rich history and a proud tradition. A key element of this history has been the leadership of their team captains. Over the years, six different players have had the honor of wearing the "C" for the Stars.
The first captain of the Dallas Stars was Bill Masterton. Masterton led the team from 1967 to 1968, during their inaugural season in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was a respected leader both on and off the ice, and his jersey number (19) has been retired by the Stars in his honor.
After Masterton, Bob Goldham served as captain for three seasons, from 1968 to 1971. Goldham was a steady and reliable presence on the ice, and he helped the Stars make their first playoff appearance in 1969.
The next captain of the Stars was Mike Modano. Modano captained the team for 14 seasons, from 1994 to 2009. He is the Stars' all-time leading scorer and is considered one of the greatest players in NHL history. Modano led the Stars to their first Stanley Cup championship in 1999.
After Modano, Brenden Morrow served as captain for three seasons, from 2009 to 2013. Morrow was a heart-and-soul player who was always willing to put his body on the line for his team. He led the Stars to the Western Conference Finals in 2010.
The current captain of the Dallas Stars is Jamie Benn. Benn has been captain since 2013, and he has led the team to a number of playoff appearances. In the 2014-15 season, Benn won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer.
The Dallas Stars have had a long and storied history, and their captains have played a key role in their success. From Bill Masterton to Jamie Benn, these players have led the team with pride and determination, and they have helped to make the Stars one of the most respected and successful franchises in the NHL.
