TikTok Faces Deadline for Sale or Ban

Law Specifies 270-Day Divestiture Period

April 23, 2024 Update: 4:00 PM

A bill has been enacted that requires ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, to sell the popular video-sharing app or face a ban in the United States. The law specifies that if ByteDance fails to divest its ownership of TikTok within 270 days (approximately nine months) of the bill's enactment, the ban will go into effect.

The law was signed by President Biden on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. It is intended to address concerns that TikTok poses a national security risk due to its potential to collect and share sensitive user data with the Chinese government.

TikTok has expressed opposition to the law, stating that it complies with all applicable U.S. laws and does not share user data with the Chinese government. The company has indicated that it will challenge the law in court.

The future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain. If ByteDance fails to divest its ownership within the specified timeframe, the app will be banned from operating in the country. However, it is possible that the law could be challenged or overturned in court before the deadline arrives.
